Citing Cleveland’s Ohio City Farm as possibly the largest urban farm in the nation up until recently, OSU Extension educator Mike Hogan explains that urban farming continues to grow in Ohio, according to Mansfield News Journal.
Urban farming might involve a rooftop garden or it might mean an empty lot that’s been turned into a community vegetable garden.
Recently, federal farm bills have included provisions for urban farms, like programs to support small-scale farmers. Both Cleveland and Columbus have modified zoning regulations so urban farmers have more freedom when it comes to keeping chickens and other practices. And with people becoming more concerned about food safety, there’s an increased demand for locally-grown food.
