BARNESVILLE, Ohio – A Buckeye Trails High School vocational agriculture class and Dickinson Cattle Company of Barnesville teamed together to win a wheelbarrow full of awards at the 2000 annual International Texas Longhorn Association championship show.
The three-day show was held at Michigan State University’s new Livestock Show Pavilion in East Lansing. Animals competed from 16 states and Canada.
Cattle that won major shows for the previous 12 months were eligible to compete.
Dickinson Cattle Company General Manager Darol Dickinson worked with Ginny Barker, vocational agriculture teacher for Buckeye Trails, to develop a plan for the show project. Students with livestock experience, excellent school attendance and top grade averages were qualified for the championship show project. After school and on weekends, several of the vocational agriculture class worked at DCCl, training, bathing and grooming the 38 entries for the big event.
Buckeye Trail FFA’ers Andy Juzwiak, Michelle Shipe, Nicole Bates and Matt Davis competed in the championship show with assistance from Andrea McCardle of Moundsville, W.Va..
Nicole Bates showed a yearling Texas Longhorn bull to win grand champion senior bull. She also exhibited the all-age youth champion bull.
Michelle Shipe showed the champion of the composite breed division. She also showed the grand champion junior bull.
Andy Juzwiak won a first plus another first and reserve champion youth steer.
Matt Davis placed first in the youth division.
Total awards won by DCCI entries and Buckeye Trail youth include 18 ITLA championship buckles, 11 division championships or grand championships and three reserve championships.
