HOOKSTOWN, Pa. – It wasn’t a television rerun, but many of the 4-H champions at this year’s Beaver County 4-H Stockman’s Club market animal sale held Aug. 24 at the Hookstown Fair were repeat champions from last year.

Jason Heinlein of Aliquippa repeated his 2000 grand champion steer performance, followed by Levi McLaughlin of Georgetown who returned with another reserve champion steer. Bruce Searight came back with another hog win, this time boosting his 2000 reserve champion hog finish up to the grand champion spot.

And Viti family, which has shown the grand or reserve champion lamb since 1992, kept the streak alive, as Chelsea Viti won both grand and reserve champion honors this year.

Viti received $4.60 a pound for her 140-pound grand champion from the Chippewa and Rochester Giant Eagles and $4.20 a pound from Unis Dental Associates in Aliquippa for her 132-pound reserve champion lamb. Last year’s champion bids were $6.70 and $5, respectively.

Sisters Theresa and Cheryl Domitrovich won the lightweight and mediumweight lamb classes, respectively.

The 34 lambs averaged $2.10 a pound with the champions; $1.99, without.

Steers. Jason Heinlein’s 1,150-pound grand champion steer, the champion Angus, sold for $3 a pound to Buck Stove and Fireplace, 30 cents lower than his grand champion received last year.

Levi McLaughlin’s 1,090-pound reserve champion steer, which was the champion in the “all other breeds” class, brought $1.85 a pound from Hoss’s Steak and Seafood House.

Christopher Goehring showed the champion Maine-Anjou; Levi’s sister, Kristina, showed the champion Hereford; and Dakon Moore showed the champion Shorthorn and the reserve champion “all other breeds.” Nathan Iorio showed the reserve champion Angus; Ashley Goehring, reserve champion Maine-Anjou; Amanda Frazier, reserve champion Hereford; and Amanda Heinlein, reserve champion Shorthorn.

The 28 steers averaged $1.36 a pound with the champions; $1.28, without champions.

Hogs. Bruce Searight’s 255-pound grand champion market hog sold for $4.30 a pound to Giant Eagle, which was up from last year’s bid of $3.60 a pound.

William H. Thompson Insurance Agency paid $4 a pound for Eric Jackson’s 240-pound reserve champion hog, a bid that was also higher than last year’s $3.45 a pound.

The 43 hogs averaged $2.02 a pound, including champions; $1.92 a pound, excluding champions.

The sale, which was conducted by auctioneer Harry Anderson, totaled $80,087 on 118 animals, up from last year’s gross sale total of $71,075.
