CARROLLTON, Ohio — A 46-year-old Carrollton man was killed in a freak accident just before noon Dec. 19.
According to Carroll County Sheriff Dale R. Williams, John P. Fasig of 1006 Canyon Road, Carrollton, an employee of Carrollton Farmer’s Exchange, backed up an icy, snow-covered steep driveway at 3411 Arbor Road N.E., Carrollton, to deliver feed.
Williams said it appears Fasig was unloading bags of feed onto a pallet when the truck began to move.
A witness saw Fasig running alongside the truck before the truck went off the left side of the road and overturned. Augusta Fire Chief Ron Dinger said his department was toned to the scene at 11:55 a.m. When they arrived, they found Fasig pinned under the rear tires.
Dinger requested assistance from Carrollton Village Fire Department, and they used air bags to lift the truck off Fasig.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by Carroll County Coroner Dr. Mandal Haas.
Bruce Burgett, general manager of the Carrollton Farmer’s Exchange who was a neighbor to Fasig, said directors and employees of the business were shocked when they learned the news.
“John will be missed and he will be difficult to replace,” said Burgett. “Our prayers and thoughts are with John’s wife, Carla, their three children and grandchildren as well as his parents.”
Burgett said Fasig’s primary responsibility was the delivery of feed, fertilizer and farm supplies.
“In all these years, he never had an accident,” Burgett noted. “He was always prompt for work, never missed work even when he did not feel well and always worked late on Saturday when asked. He sincerely cared about his customers receiving their order. All of us at the Farmers Exchange will miss him.”
Fasig worked for Carrollton Farmer’s Exchange for approximately 10 years.
A total of 17 firefighters from Augusta, Carrollton Village and Carroll County Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. assisted at the scene along with Maple Cotton Ambulance personnel.
Burgett expressed appreciation to all those who assisted at the scene.
“All you did was deeply appreciated,” he said.
