A few weeks ago, my 2-year-old great-granddaughter discovered shadows for the first time. Noelle is a very cute and inquisitive little girl.
Her mother put her to bed for the evening, and it wasn’t long before they heard her crying. Lyndsay, her mother, went into Noelle’s room to see what the problem was. Noelle pointed at the shadows on the wall and said, “I scared.”
Her mother tried to explain to her what a shadow was; however, Noelle did not quite understand why there were shadows on the walls of her room. Lyndsay prayed with her, and when Noelle opened her eyes, the shadows were still there. So she asked her mother to pray again.
Her father, Ben, finally came into the room and moved some things around so that the shadows disappeared.
How would you go about explaining a shadow to a 2 year-old child? No matter how you try, it is not an easy thing to do.
As I was thinking about shadows, I made a list of scripture references using the word shadow or shadows. Here they are: Job 3:5, Job 14:2, Psalm 17:8, Psalm 39:6, Psalm 144:4, Ecclesiastes 6:12, Isaiah 30:2, Isaiah 49:2, Colossians 2:17, Hebrews 10:1, James 1:17, job 17:7, and Song of Solomon 2:17.
Share this article with your family, friends, or Sunday School class and ask someone to define the word shadow without looking it up. Ask them how they would explain shadows to a child? You will be surprised just how difficult it is.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (James 1:17).
