SMITHVILLE, Ohio — On Nov. 24, 10 members of the Smithville FFA traveled to Triway High School to compete in the FFA Subdistrict Parliamentary Procedures Contest. The team placed third overall and only missed second place by 60 points.
As the team practiced for many weeks they took on the roles of president, Marie Arnold; vice president, Wayne Stoller; secretary, Abby Kauffman; treasurer, Katelyn Thut; reporter, Samantha Steiner; sentinel, Jill Hollenbaugh; junior adviser, Sean Davis and the other members where Carrie Howland, Richard Reynolds and Donnie Mercer.
The contest was a success and the team received a gold rating for their efforts for their performance.
On Dec. 5, the team of Samantha Steiner, Marie Arnold, Jill Hollenbaugh and Abby Kauffman traveled to Ohio State University Parker Food Science Building to compete in the Ohio FFA Food Science and Technologies Contest.
The team placed 16th overall in the contest. The contest consisted of an aroma test where they where given a list of 30 aromas and 12 tubes and they had to determine which tube was which scent.
Also another part of the contest was the contestants were given 10 pictures of factories and they had to determine what was wrong with them, they where given five taste triangles and they had to determine which one was different.
Also they had to take a test, and write a letter back to a complaining customer. The last part of the contest was a team project where they had to make calculations of calories answer questions and create a product label in an hour.
ALBANY, Ohio — It’s the giving time of the season and the Alexander FFA chapter is taking part through members donating their time to a program called Community Meals which is sponsored by the Athens Church of Christ.
Members who volunteer take part in jobs that vary anywhere from serving the food, washing dishes and cleaning up afterward.
The chapter held its annual FFA fruit sale. The title of selling the most fruit went to Lyman Kennedy who is a freshman. The second place title went to Jessie Sinclair who is a junior.
In addition, each member who sold at least $100 of fruit will receive an award of 10 percent of their total earnings of fruit sold.
WEST SALEM, Ohio — On Dec. 7, the Northwestern-Wayne FFA Parliamentary Procedure competed in the 2009 district competition hosted by the Huskies.
The team placed first overall and moved on to the state contest in Columbus Dec. 19.
The team consisted of Karly Berry, Tessa Hershey, Chris Thomas, Katyrna Ousley, Sabrina Johnson, Zane Dilyard, Travis Clark, Zach Hottel, Sarhra Flinn, and Jessica Wellert.
Northwestern FFA will collect cleaned Christmas trees beginning at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 5. People living at Lea Crest Estates, High Point or living in the villages of New Pittsburg, Lattasburg, Congress and West Salem may leave their cleaned trees at the curb in front of their homes for free pickup.
Anyone interested in recycling their Christmas trees and does not live in one of the villages may drop off their trees at the New Pittsburg Park pavilion or at the West Salem Elementary school basketball court.
The FFA will deliver the trees to the west Salem Beagle Club for the protection of rabbits and other wildlife. This community service will act as a conservation project in a productive way of recycling used Christmas trees. This will be the 22nd year for the project.
