CADIZ, Ohio – Although the crowd dwindled during the late hours of night, it didn’t stop buyers from giving $111,201 to Harrison County 4-H members. However, the 2002 Harrison County Junior Fair sales July 12 were down $7,000 compared to last year.
Around midnight, Ann’s Dairyland paid $3 a pound for Jeremy Nitz’s grand champion steer, a price that pales compared to last year’s sale price of $6.60.
Jennifer Rinkes’ 1,270-pound reserve grand champion steer sold for $2.20 a pound to Shelly & Sands, Inc.
Matt Tipton won the senior showmanship award. Janelle Valdinger won the intermediate showmanship award and Carl Birney won the junior showmanship award.
The unofficial average price per pound without champions was $1.20.
Hogs. The market hog sale got off to a confusing start. After the grand and reserve champions were sold, a confused buyer attempted to buy the next two hogs for $6.25. Not realizing that the price wasn’t for the whole hogs, but per pound, the buyer explained what had happened and the hogs were resold.
Coffy’s Bilo matched the price of $5 a pound they paid last year for Richelle Beatty’s 251-pound grand champion hog.
Ridge Pump & Supply bought Jared Scott’s reserve champion market hog for $4.10 a pound. The bid was up $1.10 from last year. Scott also won the intermediate showmanship award. Derek Stromski won the senior showmanship award and Kallie Telfer won the junior showmanship award.
The 90 hogs brought an average of $1.52 a pound excluding the champions, down 12 cents from last year.
Feeder calves. Hare Blacktop paid $1.25 a pound for Alan Albright’s grand champion feeder calf.
Kyle Bardall’s reserve champion feeder calf sold for $1.05 and was bought by long-time fair supporters D&J Sales and Services.
Katelyn Kendziorski won the senior showmanship award and John Dauch won the junior showmanship award.
The average price per pound without champions was 79 cents, down 42 cents from last year.
Lambs. Coffy’s Bilo paid $10 per pound for Janelle Valdinger’s grand champion lamb; the price was down $8.50 from last year’s price. Valdinger also won the intermediate showmanship award and sheep show of showman award.
Rupert Beetham matched the grand champion’s price of $10 by buying Cylene Smith’s 117-pound reserve champion lamb.
Claire Heavilin won the best rate of gain and the outstanding market sheep project award. Kayla Valdinger won the junior showmanship award.
The average price per pound without champions was $2.03, down 13 cents from last year.
Poultry. Just like last year, Derek Stromski sold his grand champion pen of three market chickens, but for a lesser price.
Belmont National Bank bought them for $375, down $50 from last year. Stromski won the senior outstanding market poultry project award.
Zachary Gardner’s three chickens outsold Stromski when Wilgus & Company bought them for $400.
Gardner won the intermediate outstanding market poultry project award; Jessica Cost won the junior outstanding market poultry project award.
The average price paid for a pen of three chickens without champions was $102. 27.
Back-to-back grand champion turkey winner, Dillon Brogan, sold his turkey to Williams Furniture for $475.
William’s Furniture also bought the reserve champion turkey from Ashley Thomas for $375.
Derek Stromski won the senior outstanding turkey project award and Amber Thomas won the junior outstanding turkey project award.
The average price paid without champions was $117.35.
Feeder calves. Alan Albright sold his grand champion feeder calf to Hare Blacktop for $1.25 a pound, down cents from last year.

The average price per pound was 79 cents, down 33 cents from last year.
Rabbits. Derek Stromski continued his winning ways and sold his grand champion pen of three rabbits for $350 to Excel Mining, down $75 from last year.
Reserve champion Michael Wright sold his rabbits to Gallagher Monuments for $100.
The average price paid without champions was $79.33.
Royalty. This year’s fair royalty was king Keith Eddy, queen Alisha Hoop, princess Kallie Telfer and prince Austin Fogle.
